As the planet turns its gaze to South Africa and the World Cup finally gets under way, Africa's biggest rock band The Parlotones took to the stage in Johannesburg last night for a seminal performance that was shown on BBC2 and watched by a global TV audience of 1 billion.

Performing after The Black Eyed Peas and Alicia Keys and before Shakira closed proceedings, The Parlotones whipped the audience of 30,000 screaming fans who included Desmond Tutu and Jacob Zuma into a frenzy with rousing renditions of 'Life Design' and their new single 'Push Me To The Floor'.

"Being part of the biggest televised global music spectacular EVER sent shivers down the spine," said lead singer Khan Morbe. "I can't believe it's happening in our backyard and getting the chance to perform our music to a billion souls around the world is an indescribable feeling. The concert truly showcased everything that is wonderful about modern South Africa, our amazing country and beautiful people. Here's to a lekka (awesome) world cup! VIVA Mnzansi!"
